Family attractions in Scotland

The Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park in Stirling, Scotland, is one of the country's most popular and exciting family attractions. This expansive park covers approximately 49 hectares of beautiful woodland landscape and offers a unique blend of wildlife watching, adventure activities, and education. Since its opening in 1970, it has been a pioneer among safari parks in the UK and is now a staple in the tourist landscape of Central Scotland. The park is located in a flat, picturesque area near the town of Stirling and is known for housing over 350 rare and exotic animals that visitors can experience up close.

Adventure park with exotic animals

A central element of the Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park is the Safari Drive, where visitors can drive through various reserves in their own car and observe animals such as lions, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and camels. The area with the Barbary macaques is particularly popular, where the cheeky animals often climb onto cars – an experience that promises both excitement and entertainment. For the safety of visitors, it is recommended to keep the windows closed, which makes encounters with these curious primates even more thrilling. In addition to the car ride, there are areas that can be explored on foot, such as Lemur Land, where visitors can stroll among freely roaming lemurs and marvel at their playful behavior up close.

Animal observation for kids

The park places a strong emphasis on conservation and education. Many of the animals are part of international breeding programs, including the southern white rhinos, which have been living in the park since 2004 and have already produced several offspring. The lion population is also carefully managed to promote genetic diversity, with regular exchanges between various European zoos. Another highlight is the daily shows, including the impressive bird of prey flight displays, where falcons, eagles, and owls demonstrate their flying skills, as well as the sea lion shows in the modern "California Cove" facility. These shows not only provide entertainment but also insights into the behavior and needs of these animals.

Educational programs at safari park

For families with children, the Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park is a true paradise. In addition to animal encounters, there are numerous adventure and play opportunities to round out the day. The huge adventure playground includes a pirate ship, a castle structure, and a sand area, partly covered to guarantee fun even in changing weather. Other attractions include pedal boats for a ride on a small lake, a "Flying Fox" zip line course, and a dinosaur exhibition that has expanded the offering since 2020. This prehistoric zone features over 20 life-sized, moving dinosaurs such as velociraptors, triceratops, and an imposing Tyrannosaurus Rex, creating an immersive experience with sounds and movements.

Nature experience in Stirling Scotland

The park also offers a variety of dining options, including a restaurant and several snack stands that offer both local and international cuisine. For those who want to enjoy their own food, picnic tables are available, and there are even barbecue areas that can be used free of charge – complete with provided charcoal and lighting aids. These amenities make the park a place where one can easily spend a whole day without getting bored.

Nature conservation and accessibility are further strengths of the park. It is a member of prestigious organizations such as the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria and supports global projects for the protection of endangered species. Furthermore, the grounds are largely designed to be "wheelchair-friendly," with ramps to viewpoints and special restroom facilities that provide comfortable visits for people with limited mobility. The paths are well-maintained, and the staff is always ready to answer questions or provide additional information about the animals and their habitats.

The surroundings of the park also contribute to its charm. Nestled in a peaceful woodland landscape, it offers a welcome escape from urban hustle and bustle and invites visitors to enjoy nature. In addition to the main attractions, there are smaller areas such as the "Pets Farm," where visitors can pet domestic and farm animals like goats and rabbits, as well as a boat ride to "Chimp Island," where chimpanzees can be observed in a naturalistic setting.

Absolutely love, you get close to the animals, there are barbecue places, a dinosaur exhibition. The lions are absolutely adorable and there are also a small petting zoo as well, food is amazing and the drive through is also really good. If you go through the monkey zone, be careful, your car MAY get destroyed.

My friend and I did the Guraffe experience and it was absolutely amazing. We got to prepare an enrichment tub for them, be up close with the giraffes and even feed them. Would highly recommend this experience!

The enclosures for all the animals we saw were very small. Seeing these incredible wild animals just swimming in circles in tiny pools, or behind glass being swamped by large groups of noisy children just felt wrong and outdated.

We go for the Christmas day out every year and as fun as it was, there is nowhere near as many stalls and things to do as there used to be. There used to be a little market with handmade things, gift baskets etc, as well as christmas food stalls, chippy, loads of rides such as a fun house etc. This year there was none of that, don’t get me wrong there was still some rides and food stalls but it felt a lot more bland this year which is a shame as it used to be a great christmas day out!

Esperienza unica.

Blair Drummond is always a great day out but we really enjoyed visiting on the first day of the festive attractions. Particularly the wee train, as we had our new baby, Hector, on board the train named Hector! So much quieter than in the summer months and just as good. Only criticisms are that it feels a bit less unique and relaxed with the additional amusements and rides. I appreciate they probably bring in a lot of money though. We also felt that the prices at the Hotel Chocolate bar were unreasonable at over £5 each. Hot choc from the coffee stands were very tasty and just £2.90 so a lot easier to swallow!
